OBJECTIVE: To explore the potential association between dietary live microbes and the prevalence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, data of 9791 participants aged 20 years or older in this study were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2013 and 2018. Participants in this study were classified into three groups according to the Sanders' dietary live microbe classification system: low, medium, and high dietary live microbe groups. COPD was defined by a combination of self-reported physician diagnoses and standardized medical status questionnaires. Logistic regression and subgroup analysis were used to assess whether dietary live microbes were associated with the risk of COPD. RESULTS: Through full adjustment for confounders, participants in the high dietary live microbe group had a low prevalence of COPD in contrast to those in low dietary live microbe group (OR: 0.614, 95% CI: 0.474-0.795, and p < 0.001), but no significant association with COPD was detected in the medium and the low dietary live microbe groups. This inverse relationship between dietary live microbe intake and COPD prevalence was more inclined to occur in smokers, females, participants aged from 40 to 59 years old and non-obese participants. CONCLUSION: A high dietary live microbe intake was associated with a low prevalence of COPD, and this negative correlation was detected especially in smokers, females, participants aged from 40 to 59 years old and non-obese participants.

Polyphenols, polysaccharides, and proteins are essential nutrients and functional substances present in food, and when present together these components often interact with each other to influence their structure and function. Proteins and polysaccharides are also excellent carrier materials for polyphenols. In this context, this study investigated the non-covalent interactions between taxifolin (TAX), Lentinus edodes mycelia polysaccharide (LMP), and ß-casein (ß-CN). ß-CN and LMP spontaneously formed nanocomplexes by hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces. The quenching constant and binding constant were (1.94 ± 0.02) × 1013 L mol-1 s-1 and (3.22 ± 0.17) × 105 L mol-1 at 298 K, respectively. The altered conformation of ß-CN, resulting from the binding to LMP, affected the interaction with TAX. LMP significantly enhanced the binding affinity of TAX and ß-CN, but did not change the static quenching binding mode. The binding constant for ß-CN-TAX was (3.96 ± 0.09) × 1013 L mol-1, and that for the interaction between TAX and ß-CN-LMP was (32.06 ± 0.05) × 1013 L mol-1. In summary, ß-CN-LMP nanocomplexes have great potential as a nanocarrier for polyphenols, and this study provides a theoretical foundation for the rational design of non-covalent complexes involving LMP and ß-CN, both in binary and ternary configurations.

Metasurface enables the generation and manipulation of multiphoton entanglement with flat optics, providing a more efficient platform for large-scale photonic quantum information processing. Here, we show that a single metasurface optical device would allow more efficient characterizations of multiphoton entangled states, such as shadow tomography, which generally requires fast and complicated control of optical setups to perform information-complete measurements, a demanding task using conventional optics. The compact and stable device here allows implementations of general positive operator valued measures with a reduced sample complexity and significantly alleviates the experimental complexity to implement shadow tomography. Integrating self-learning and calibration algorithms, we observe notable advantages in the reconstruction of multiphoton entanglement, including using fewer measurements, having higher accuracy, and being robust against experimental imperfections. Our work unveils the feasibility of metasurface as a favorable integrated optical device for efficient characterization of multiphoton entanglement, and sheds light on scalable photonic quantum technologies with ultra-thin optical devices.

Zinc-air battery as one of the new generations of battery system, its theoretical specific energy is as high as 1086 Wh kg-1, specific capacity up to 820 mAh/g, and zinc has the advantages of environmental friendliness, resource abundance, low cost and good safety, so it has attracted much attention. However, due to its slow reaction kinetic process, zinc-air battery will produce a large charging overpotential usually up to 2 V, it is far beyond the theoretical voltage of 1.65 V, so reducing the overpotential of zinc-air batteries is extremely necessary, and the most common way to solve this problem is to use excellent catalyst cathode to improve the oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution kinetics of zinc-air batteries. So we developed a new photothermal assisted zinc-air battery system with Hollow carbon nanosphere@poly (vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorofluoroethylene)@CdS(HCN@PVTC@CdS) photocathode, the pyroelectric and photocatalysis effect can effectively promote the reaction kinetics and reduce the reaction overpotential. With the pyroelectric and photocatalysis synergistic effect, the zinc-air has displayed a high discharge potential of 1.33 V and a low charging potential of 1.5 V with good cycle stability. This multi-assist technology with built-in electric and light fields paves the way for the development of high-performance zinc-air batteries and other energy storage systems.

Parotid gland tumors account for approximately 2% to 10% of head and neck tumors. Segmentation of parotid glands and tumors on magnetic resonance images is essential in accurately diagnosing and selecting appropriate surgical plans. However, segmentation of parotid glands is particularly challenging due to their variable shape and low contrast with surrounding structures. Recently, deep learning has developed rapidly, and Transformer-based networks have performed well on many computer vision tasks. However, Transformer-based networks have yet to be well used in parotid gland segmentation tasks. We collected a multi-center multimodal parotid gland MRI dataset and implemented parotid gland segmentation using a purely Transformer-based U-shaped segmentation network. We used both absolute and relative positional encoding to improve parotid gland segmentation and achieved multimodal information fusion without increasing the network computation. In addition, our novel training approach reduces the clinician's labeling workload by nearly half. Our method achieved good segmentation of both parotid glands and tumors. On the test set, our model achieved a Dice-Similarity Coefficient of 86.99%, Pixel Accuracy of 99.19%, Mean Intersection over Union of 81.79%, and Hausdorff Distance of 3.87. The purely Transformer-based U-shaped segmentation network we used outperforms other convolutional neural networks. In addition, our method can effectively fuse the information from multi-center multimodal MRI dataset, thus improving the parotid gland segmentation.

Modification of dairy proteins during processing impacts structural assemblies, influencing textural and nutritional properties of dairy products, and release and availability of amino acids during digestion. By modifying only pH, acid heat-set bovine dairy gels with divergent textural properties were developed to alter protein digestion. In vitro assay confirmed faster digestion of protein from a firm gel (pH 5.65) versus a soft gel (pH 6.55). We hypothesised that firm gel (FIRM-G; pH 5.6) would result in greater indispensable amino acid (IAA) appearance in circulation over 5 h and corresponding differences in gastric myoelectrical activity relative to soft gel (SOFT-G; pH 6.2). In a randomised, single-blind cross-over trial, healthy females (n = 20) consumed 150 g of each gel; plasma amino acid appearance was assessed over 5 hours. Iso-nitrogenous, iso-caloric gels were prepared from identical mixtures of bovine milk and whey protein concentrates; providing 17.7 g (FIRM-G) and 18.9 g (SOFT-G) of protein per serving. Secondary outcomes included gastric myoelectrical activity measured by body surface gastric mapping, glycaemic, triglyceridaemic, and subjective appetite and digestive responses. Overall plasma IAA (area under the curve) did not differ between gels. However, plasma IAA concentrations were higher, and increased more rapidly over time after SOFT-G compared with FIRM-G (1455 ± 53 versus 1350 ± 62 µmol L-1 at 30 min, p = 0.024). Similarly, total, branched-chain and dispensable amino acids were higher at 30 min with SOFT-G than FIRM-G (total: 3939 ± 97 versus 3702 ± 127 µmol L-1, p = 0.014; branched-chain: 677 ± 30 versus 619 ± 34 µmol L-1, p = 0.047; dispensable: 2334 ± 53 versus 2210 ± 76 µmol L-1, p = 0.032). All other measured parameters were similar between gels. Peak postprandial aminoacidaemia was higher and faster following ingestion of SOFT-G. Customised plasma amino acid appearance from dairy is achievable by altering gel coagulum structure using pH during processing and may have minimal influence on related postprandial responses, with implications for targeting food design for optimal health. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the main histological subtype of primary liver cancer and remains one of the most common solid malignancies globally. Ferroptosis was recently defined as an iron-catalyzed form of regulated necrosis. Because cancer cells exhibit higher iron requirements than noncancer cells, treatment with ferroptosis-inducing compounds may be a feasible strategy for cancer therapy. However, cancer cells develop acquired resistance to evade ferroptosis, and the mechanisms responsible for ferroptosis resistance are not fully clarified. In the current study, we reported that DDX39B was downregulated during sorafenib-induced ferroptosis in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Exogenous introduction of DDX39B ensured the survival of HCC cells upon exposure to sorafenib, while the opposite phenomenon was observed in DDX39B-silenced HCC cells. Mechanistically, we demonstrated that DDX39B increased GPX4 levels by promoting the splicing and cytoplasmic translocation of GPX4 pre-mRNA, which was sufficient to detoxify sorafenib-triggered excess lipid ROS production, lipid peroxidation accumulation, ferrous iron levels, and mitochondrial damage. Inhibition of DDX39B ATPase activity by CCT018159 repressed the splicing and cytoplasmic export of GPX4 pre-mRNA and synergistically assisted sorafenib-induced ferroptotic cell death in HCC cells. Taken together, our data uncover a novel role for DDX39B in ferroptosis resistance by modulating the maturation of GPX4 mRNA via a posttranscriptional approach and suggest that DDX39B inhibition may be a promising therapeutic strategy to enhance the sensitivity and vulnerability of HCC cells to sorafenib.

LncRNAs have shown to regulate ferroptosis in colorectal cancer (CRC), but the mechanism remains largely unknown. This study unveiled the mechanism of SNHG4 underlying ferroptosis in CRC. RNA-seq and RT-PCR assay confirmed SNHG4 was decreased after Erastin treatment in CRC cells. Overexpression of SNHG4 inhibited and silence promoted CRC cells ferroptosis. SNHG4 was positively correlated to c-Myb in CRC tissues and both located in cytoplasm of CRC cells. RIP and RNA pull-down assays verified the interaction between SNHG4 and c-Myb. Silence of c-Myb alleviated the suppressing effect on ferroptosis by SNHG4 in CRC cells. Dual-luciferase reporter assay revealed that SNHG4 sponging miR-150-5p in CRC cells. Overexpression of SNHG4 decreased the miR-150-5p and increased c-Myb expression. c-Myb was a direct target gene of miR-150-5p in CRC cells. Moreover, effect of CDO1 on ferroptosis was regulated transcriptionally by c-Myb, overexpression of c-Myb reduce CDO1 expression and enhance the GPX4 levels. The animal models confirmed that regulatory effect of SNHG4 on miR-150-5p and c-Myb after inducing ferroptosis. We concluded that SNHG4 inhibited Erastin-induce ferroptosis in CRC, this effect is via sponging miR-150-5p to regulate c-Myb expression, and activated CDO1/GPX4 axis. These findings provide insights into the regulatory mechanism of SNHG4 on ferroptosis.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries are anticipated to be the next generation of important energy storage devices to replace lithium-ion batteries due to the ongoing use of lithium resources and the safety hazards associated with organic electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries. Manganese-based compounds, including MnOx materials, have prominent places among the many zinc-ion battery cathode materials. Additionally, Cu doping can cause the creation of an oxygen vacancy, which increases the material's internal electric field and enhances cycle stability. MnOx also has great cyclic stability and promotes ion transport. At a current density of 0.2 A g-1, the Cu/MnOx nanocomposite obtained a high specific capacitance of 304.4 mAh g-1. In addition, Cu/MnOx nanocomposites showed A high specific capacity of 198.9 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at a current density of 0.5 A g-1. Therefore, Cu/MnOx nanocomposites are expected to be a strong contender for the next generation of zinc-ion battery cathode materials in high energy density storage systems.

The global dairy market has been increasingly diversified with more dairy product offerings of milk products from different animal species. Meanwhile, milk powders remain the main exported dairy product format due to their ease of transportation. In this work, we studied the structural changes, protein hydrolysis and nutrient delivery during dynamic gastric digestion and small intestinal digestion of cow, goat and sheep milk reconstituted from commercial whole milk powders. The results show that the reconstituted milks digest similarly to processed fresh milk. The digestion behaviors of the three reconstituted ruminant milks are broadly similar (gastric coagulation, kinetics of gastric emptying of protein and fat and the high digestibility in the small intestine) with some differences, which are likely contributed by the processing history of the milk powders. The delivery of individual amino acids to the small intestine differed between the early and late stages of gastric digestion, which were primarily affected by the abundance of amino acids in caseins and whey proteins but also by the difference between milk types associated with their gastric coagulation behaviors. This work showed that powdered milk is similar to fresh processed milk in digestion behavior, and the inherent differences between ruminant milks can be modified by processing treatments.

Efforts to advance RNA aptamers as a new therapeutic modality have been limited by their susceptibility to degradation and immunogenicity. In a previous study, we demonstrated synthesized short double-stranded region-containing circular RNAs (ds-cRNAs) with minimal immunogenicity targeted to dsRNA-activated protein kinase R (PKR). Here we test the therapeutic potential of ds-cRNAs in a mouse model of imiquimod-induced psoriasis. We find that genetic supplementation of ds-cRNAs leads to inhibition of PKR, resulting in alleviation of downstream interferon-α and dsRNA signals and attenuation of psoriasis phenotypes. Delivery of ds-cRNAs by lipid nanoparticles to the spleen attenuates PKR activity in examined splenocytes, resulting in reduced epidermal thickness. These findings suggest that ds-cRNAs represent a promising approach to mitigate excessive PKR activation for therapeutic purposes.

OBJECTIVES: The sarcopenia (SI) index, defined as the serum creatinine to cystatin C ratio, is considered a predictor of poor muscle health and malnutrition, which is related to major adverse cardiovascular events. However, the effect of the SI index on cognitive function in stroke patients remains unknown. In this study, we aimed to examine the association between the SI and longitudinal cognitive impairment in patients with acute ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Participants who met the inclusion criteria in this national, multicenter, prospective cohort study were enrolled from the Impairment of Cognition and Sleep (ICONS) study of the China National Stroke Registry-3 (CNSR-3). They were categorized into four groups according to the quartile of the SI index. Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scale. Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models were performed to evaluate the association between the SI index and post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) at the 3-month follow-up. Moreover, discrimination tests were used to evaluate the incremental predictive value of the SI index beyond the potential risk factors. Furthermore, we performed subgroup analyses to test interactions. RESULTS: Among the enrolled participants, the lower the SI index was, the worse the cognitive performance. At the 3-month follow-up, participants in the lowest SI quartile group exhibited a 42% increase in the risk of cognitive impairment relative to the highest quartile group [OR 0.58 (95% CI 0.37-0.90)]. Moreover, after applying the discrimination test, adding the SI index into the potential risk factors resulted in a slight improvement in predicting the risk of cognitive impairment [NRI 14% (P = 0.01)]. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that a lower sarcopenia index was positively associated with a higher prevalence of PSCI. Monitoring the SI index in stroke patients and early identification and treatment of individuals with low SI level may be helpful to reduce the risk of cognitive impairment.

Understanding land structure change and stability in the process of oasisization is particularly important for the desertification control in sandy land. Based on land use data of eight periods from 1980 to 2020, we extracted the spatial distribution information of oasis land in Mu Us Sandy Land, and analyzed the spatio-temporal variations of land transformation patterns and stability of oasis land with overlay analysis and grid analysis. The results showed that desertification in the Mu Us Sandy Land had reversed, with a significant process of oasis. The area of forest and grassland increased from 10.2% in 1980 to 73.7% in 2020, while the area of oasisization land increased from 32500 km2 in 1980 to 33900 km2 in 2020. The area of extremely severe, severe, and moderate desertification significantly decreased, while the area of non-desertification and mild desertification obviously increased. The four patterns of oasisization land transformation, including stability, fluctuation, expansion, and retreat, which accounted for 78.7%, 12.2%, 6.2%, and 2.9% of the oasisization land area in 2020, respectively. The oasisization land with low change intensity (the cumulative change intensity less than 0.12) in the Mu Us Sandy Land accounted for 82.7% of the total oasisization area, and the oasisization land in the sandy land was generally stable. Zoning management strategies should be applied according to the stability of sand belt and transformation pattern of oasisization land to achieve the goal of efficient system management and improvement, including eliminating sand hazards at desertification expansion areas with strong wind and sand activities, consolidating sand resources at oasisization areas where ecologically fragile desertification was frequent, and sustainably managing and utilizing sand resources at stable expansion of oases in forest- and grass-rich oasisization areas.

For some food applications, it is desirable to control the flavor release profiles of volatile flavor compounds. In this study, the effects of crosslinking method and protein composition on the flavor release properties of emulsion-filled protein hydrogels were explored, using peppermint essential oil as a model volatile compound. Emulsion-filled protein gels with different properties were prepared using different crosslinking methods and gelatin concentrations. Flavor release from the emulsion gels was then monitored using an electronic nose, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and sensory evaluation. Enzyme-crosslinked gels had greater hardness and storage modulus than heat-crosslinked ones. The hardness and storage modulus of the gels increased with increasing gelatin concentration. For similar gel compositions, flavor release and sensory perception were faster from the heat-crosslinked gels than the enzyme-crosslinked ones. For the same crosslinking method, flavor release and perception decreased with increasing gelatin concentration, which was attributed to retardation of flavor diffusion through the hydrogel matrix. Overall, this study shows that the release of hydrophobic aromatic substances can be modulated by controlling the composition and crosslinking of protein hydrogels, which may be useful for certain food applications.

This paper presents a vision-based finite-time prescribed performance controller for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) tracking of uncooperative aerial targets. The relative states between UAV and target are estimated by an onboard monocular camera. The inability of visual measurements to accurately determine the initial state of the target renders conventional prescribed performance controllers ineffective in such situations. As a result, it becomes essential to address the problem of prescribed performance control under conditions of uncertain initial values By utilizing an auxiliary transforming function, an Asymmetric Barrier Lyapunov Function (ABLF) and a finite-time prescribed performance function, a robust adaptive controller based on backstepping framework is proposed to deal with state constraints under unknown initial tracking conditions. It is proved that, the closed-loop relative position is capable of reaching the prescribed performance bound before the preset transforming time and converging to the prescribed steady-state error before a finite setting time. Simulation examples are provided to illustrated the effectiveness of the proposed tracking algorithm.

Background: The MYCN copy number category is closely related to the prognosis of neuroblastoma (NB). Therefore, this study aimed to assess the predictive ability of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) radiomic features for MYCN copy number in NB. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 104 pediatric patients with NB that had been confirmed by pathology. To develop the Bio-omics model (B-model), which incorporated clinical and biological aspects, PET/CT radiographic features, PET quantitative parameters, and significant features with multivariable stepwise logistic regression were preserved. Important radiomics features were identified through least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and univariable analysis. On the basis of radiomics features obtained from PET and CT scans, the radiomics model (R-model) was developed. The significant bio-omics and radiomics features were combined to establish a Multi-omics model (M-model). The above 3 models were established to differentiate MYCN wild from MYCN gain and MYCN amplification (MNA). The calibration curve and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were performed to verify the prediction performance. Post hoc analysis was conducted to compare whether the constructed M-model can distinguish MYCN gain from MNA. Results: The M-model showed excellent predictive performance in differentiating MYCN wild from MYCN gain and MNA, which was better than that of the B-model and R-model [area under the curve (AUC) 0.83, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.74-0.92 vs. 0.81, 95% CI: 0.72-0.90 and 0.79, 95% CI: 0.69-0.89]. The calibration curve showed that the M-model had the highest reliability. Post hoc analysis revealed the great potential of the M-model in differentiating MYCN gain from MNA (AUC 0.95, 95% CI: 0.89-1). Conclusions: The M-model model based on bio-omics and radiomics features is an effective tool to distinguish MYCN copy number category in pediatric patients with NB.

Cities are one of the main sources of regional carbon emissions, and reducing urban carbon emission is the key to reducing emissions. The digital economy has transformed the economic operation mode, and it is a significant approach to support the "dual carbon goals" (carbon peaking and carbon neutrality). This article considers the externalities of the digital economy and carbon emissions. And we use spatial econometric models to analyze the effectiveness of digital economy in empowering carbon emissions reduction. Besides, we explore the static and dynamic spillover effects, and use spatial Durbin panel quantile model to analyze the digital economy's heterogeneity on carbon emissions. Research has shown that the digital economy has a remarkable carbon reduction effect, and the conclusion remains valid after considering robustness tests such as replacing the weight matrices, calculation methods, and proxy variables. The analysis of static and dynamic spillover effects indicates that the degree of the digital economy's impact on carbon emissions are significantly different. Heterogeneity analysis shows that as the digital economy develops from a low level to a high level, its impact on carbon emissions also shifts from positive promotion to negative suppression. This paper proposes a policy reference to help the development of digital economy and promote carbon neutrality in the face of severe environmental challenges.

RESUMO

18ß-Glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) is an oleane-type pentacyclic triterpene saponin obtained from glycyrrhizic acid by removing 2 glucuronic acid groups. GA and its analogues are active substances of glycyrrhiza aicd, with similar structure and important pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetes, anti-tumor and anti-fibrosis. Although GA combined compounds are in the clinical trial stages, its application potential is severely restricted by its low bioavailability, water solubility and membrane permeability. In this article, synthetic methods and structure-activity relationships (SARs) of GA derivatives from 2018 to present are reviewed based on pharmacological activity. It is hoped that this review can provide reference for the future development of potential GA preclinical candidate compounds, and furnish ideas for the development of pentacyclic triterpenoid lead compounds.

BACKGROUND: Coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) is frequently observed in atrial fibrillation (AF), the most commonly sustained arrhythmia. Nevertheless, an in-depth prognostic significance of CMD in AF is lacking. We aimed to provide insight into the predictive impact of CMD assessed by a novel non-invasive coronary angiography-derived index of microcirculatory resistance (caIMR) for major adverse events (MACE) in AF patients. METHOD: This study included patients with AF who underwent invasive coronary angiography due to suspected cardiac ischemia and did not exhibit obstructive epicardial coronary artery disease (≤50 % stenosis). The caIMR was prospectively evaluated, and the optimal cutoff value for predicting MACE was determined through ROC analysis. RESULT: A total of 463 patients with AF were enrolled. During a median of 33 months of follow-up, 111 (23.97 %) patients had MACE endpoints. The best caIMR cutoff value was 39.28. In patients with MACE, both the mean caIMR and the prevalence of elevated caIMR (caIMR>39.28) were significantly higher compared to those without MACE. An elevated caIMR was linked to a higher risk of MACE (log-rank P < 0.001) and emerged as an independent predictor of clinical outcomes (HR: 4.029; 95 % CI: 2.529-6.418; P < 0.001). In addition, the risk of MACE was higher in high caIMR patients with non-paroxysmal AF (log-rank P < 0.001) and no catheter ablation (log-rank P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Elevated caIMR is common and showed a vital independent prognostic significance in AF patients. In addition to well-known risk factors, assessment of microvascular function can be a feasible approach for early prevention and a therapeutic target in AF patients.
